3 Critical Unproductive Bad Habits to Break

3 Critical Unproductive Bad Habits to Break

Posted by Omaily Lucas on

We all have those moments. You are stressing about a deadline that’s creeping in but decide at that moment that cleaning up your desk must take priority.

Amid your school project, you mindlessly jump from tab to tab without any purpose. Bad habits creep on into our lives like cockroaches.

Consciously or unconsciously, your bad habits are killing your best effort to lead a productive life—some more than others.

Break these 3 critical unproductive bad habits in your personal or work life.

#1 Multitasking

We always aim to get more done in less time. While multitasking may seem like the obvious way of getting through your to-do list, its result is the opposite of what you desire.

Research has shown over and over again that our brain is not quite capable of handling different tasks at the same time.

In fact, by multitasking, you can reduce your productivity by as much as 40%.

Multitasking gives the illusion of you working hard and getting things done, but in fact, you’re only allocating limited focus to different tasks.

Work performed when multitasking is often incomplete and inferior.

Not to mention that in total you’ve spent more time finishing your products than if you focus on one task at the time.

Tip!

Batch your work. Allocate a certain time to each task. By allocating time periods you have a better and more realistic view of your schedule.

#2 Distractions

Having your television on, family members or friends in your working space, smartphone on your side, or social media open.

These are all magnets for grabbing your attention and deviating it from what truly matters, getting the job done.

One of the most common unproductive bad habits to break is this one, and while we’re often aware of this bad habit the “addiction” is greater than our willpower.

Every time you respond to a message, get hooked to the TV or chat with coworkers, you take seconds and minutes from your day.

Sum up all those seconds and minutes and without you even noticing you have wasted half your day.

Tip!

Learn to know your concentration behavior. While some can go on for hours, you might be able to spend a maximum of 45 minutes on a project without getting distracted. Knowing when to work and when to stop reduces the chance of distraction and increases your productivity significantly.

#3 Saying Yes

We often overlook the importance of being protective of your time.

Every time we say yes to something or someone, we say no to something or someone else.

Saying yes to your sister for a shopping day means saying no to spending the day cleaning your home on Saturday.

Break this unproductive bad habit if you want to be more productive in your life. It’s important to be mindful of what you say yes and no.

Tip!

Create rules for yourself and sticks to them. If you want to spend Saturday mornings cleaning your home, then don’t schedule any meeting around that time. If you want to limit meetings with clients to 1 hour than do so. You’re the boss of your time, so be strict with your time management performance.

Increase your productivity, lead a happier life, and achieve your goals when you take control of your time. Unproductive bad habits are meant to be broken!
